Levels of English and Identity in Some Selected Texts from African Commonwealth Literary Discourse

This work shows that African Commonwealth writers in their use of the English language have possibility deploying three levels identifiable Commonwealth, order to convey a veritable experience with needed authenticity. These include Acrolectal English, Mesolectal and Basilectal English. By using data from Literary Discourse, selected writings Achebe (1982), Asong (1995), Tah (2015), basing analysis on structural linguistics, semiology, Critical Discourse Analysis strands, proves succeed this endeavor varying degrees. It also establishes empirical evidence by strategies like grafting, code-switching, code-mixing, punning, transliteration, intertextuality, interdiscursivity, through competence can always meet objectives. The ascertains effective helps characterization, social criticism creation humour rather than usurpation speech characters, various forms both often lead redefinition identity. Thus, modern who operate only at single level do so detriment, risks degenerating into startling anachronism.
